Title I services at Rolesville are focused on K- 5 students in the area of literacy because we believe that early intervention is critical to students’ success in school. Rolesville determined the programs focus of greatest need through data gathered during the Kindergarten initial assessment and K-3 literacy assessment cards, the Development Reading Assessment and the Fast Track Reading Assessment. The literacy teacher uses a balanced literacy instructional approach. The direct instruction includes listening/speaking, working with words, comprehension, and writing. The literacy lesson is a structured, fast-paced session consisting of opportunities for the child to engage in familiar reading, shared reading, guided reading, writing activities, phonetic connections, and linking reading to content areas. The literacy teacher works with six small groups of students daily, Monday through Thursday. These small groups contain four to six children. The Kindergarten lessons are 30 to 40 minutes in length, while the first through fifth grade classes are 45 minutes in length. Title
