Second Grade
In second grade at Rolesville Elementary we strive to meet the individual needs of each child. The education of the total child is our goal. Students come to school believing they can learn and we nurture that belief by promoting success for all students.
By integrating the curriculum we provide an opportunity to make learning meaningful to each child's real life experiences. Students are encouraged to use critical thinking, problem solving, and cooperative learning to complete projects relating to science, social studies, language arts, technology, and math.
Our Science program consists of four strands. The areas include life cycles, weather, changes in properties of materials, and sound. Students will develop thinking and processing skills through observing and recording data in each strand.
In Social Studies our main focus is on Neighborhoods and Communities with emphasis placed on families. Students will develop an understanding of relationships of people, government, and cultural traditions.
Language Arts is integrated into four main content areas: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Writing stories goes hand-in-hand with their reading. The five stages of the writing process are taught to help students write more detailed stories. Focus is also placed on parts of the story such as the characters, the setting, the problem, the solution, and the sequential events.
In Math our program is divided into 4 strands. Those areas are:

Students are given quarterly assessments to monitor their progress.
Technology/Computer Education Studies focus on
- Using technology in the community
- Using electronic database to locate information
- Building word processing skills
- Collecting, sorting, and displaying data
- Exploring multimedia (graphics, sound, text
- Using drawing tools
In 2005/2006 we will take two field trips. These trips are integrated with the second grade curriculum and enrich the program.

Second grade students at Rolesville Elementary come to us from diverse backgrounds. It is our goal as educators to provide each individual child with a variety of activities that enhances his/her learning.
