![]() Third grade students at Rolesville face a challenging, but rewarding year. Although third-grade material can be a big leap for some students, Rolesville's team of experienced third-grade teachers uses a variety of approaches to help every child succeed. In third grade, teachers begin to move students from "learning to read" to "reading to learn". Students read a variety of both fiction and nonfiction across the curriculum, including passages and stories from their basal readers and novels that go beyond the Basal. Teachers strive to move students from primary picture books to chapter books that allow students to explore plot and character development. Problem-solving is the main focus in math throughout third grade, and students explore and implement different strategies to find solutions to a variety of problems. Third-graders also learn about measurement, geometry, and addition and subtraction with regrouping. In addition, third-graders must face the challenge of learning their multiplication tables. What fun! In science and social studies, students study the world around them. In social studies, third-graders learn about communities and neighborhoods and participate in various holiday learning experiences. In science, hands-on activities help students explore and build an understanding of plant growth and adaptations, soil concepts, light and heat, and earth/moon/sun system. Third-grade can be hard work, but it can also be lots of fun!
