Fifth Grade at Rolesville Elementary
In Language Arts we read a variety of fiction and non-fiction . We study spelling and vocabulary words from our stories. We write friendly and formal letters, creative essays, descriptive, persuasive, and compare and contrast paragraphs. We study the parts of speech, and have to do book reports on our own. We learn about the parts of a story and how expository writing is structured and learn how to read recipes, schedules and charts. We will write poems and stories and learn about sequencing and cause and effect. It sounds like a lot, but it really is fun. We will cover many things in Math this year: place value, ordering numbers, multiplication, division, units of measure, graphing, fractions, polygons, solid figures, powers of numbers, and much more. This year with our new Trailblazers program, problem solving is stressed and a key to success for all Fifth Graders. We are very pleased with the success we have in math. We have lots of fun in Social Studies learning about our country and other countries in the Western Hemisphere. We study the USA history through diverse cultures, wars and government. We use the five themes of geography to study Canada, Central America, and Mexico. This
year in
Science
we have studied the interdependence of plants and animals
in ecosystems. We have three other large units that cover landforms, weather,
and energy sources.
The highlight of our Fifth grade year is our weekend trip to Washington, DC. We see and visit many of the things we learn about in our nation's capital. We leave on Sunday morning and return on Tuesday night. We view many monuments including the new WWII Memorial. We also have free time with our chaperones to visit as many museums on the mall as we can. It is a great experience for us to see things we have learned about throughout the year. This is an experience that the students never forget. The Fifth Grade Team Ms. D'Agostino Ms. Davison Ms. Price
