Kindergarten at
Rolesville Elementary

Kindergarten is an
exciting time for your child! The kindergarten year is very important
in your child’s school experience. It is a time when attitudes toward
school and learning are strongly influenced. We, the kindergarten staff
at Rolesville Elementary, will provide fun, safe, and challenging experiences
for your child.
The kindergarten
program at Rolesville Elementary is based on how young children learn and
develop. Young children are active and curious about their world.
They learn by watching, touching, and experimenting with materials;
discussing their thoughts and feelings; and interacting with children and
adults. Guided exploration is central to the kindergarten learning experience.
Through hands-on activities, kindergartners explore, create, and solve problems
as well as develop language, social and critical thinking skills.
Skills and concepts
your child will be learning during their kindergarten year include:
|
Math:

|
Shapes,
patterns, numbers, counting, measurement, graphing, and estimation, etc. These
skills and concepts are incorporated into fun activities such as calendar
discussion, math tubbing, graphing objects, 100th day of school activities
and celebration, etc.
|
|
Language:

|
Letter
identification, letter sound recognition, rhyming words, concepts of print,
retelling of stories, etc. We will read, read, read and will
implement a read at home program that will allow children to check out
classroom books to read at home. At the end of the year, the
children should be able to read a Level 3-4 book (a book with simple text
and picture support).
|
|
Writing:

|
Recording
student dictation, guiding children to use letters and sounds to form words
that communicate their thoughts and ideas, promoting writing through class
activities—journals, write the room, list making, class books, etc.
Children also have an opportunity to participate in our school postal
system—Wee Deliver. Through this program, children can write letters
to others at our school (staff and students). At the end of the year,
the children should be able to independently write a simple sentence using
a combination of conventional and temporary spelling. They should
also be familiar with simple rules of grammar (spacing, punctuation,
capital and lower case letters).
|
|
Science and Social Studies:

|
All About Me, Changes in Fall, Safety, Family and Traditions, Seasonal
Changes, Dental Health, Plants, Famous Americans, Farms, Communities,
Oceans, etc. Science and Social Studies skills are incorporated while
studying various units through the school year. Learning centers that
provide supporting activities are open daily. Field trips throughout
the year (bus and walking) provide science and social studies enrichment.
