The media center is an integral part of the educational program at Rolesville Elementary.  The main goal of the media program is to teach children to seek and use information sources at the point of need, to teach students to become independent information users, and to teach students to become lifelong readers. We also support the staff with informational needs as well.  Let us know if we can assist you with any of your informational or recreational reading needs.

UPCOMING EVENTS IN THE MEDIA CENTER

Library Power Nights:  The Media Center is open on several Tuesday evenings per month.  Many fun events take place during these nights including such things as Pajama Night, Popcorn with Pops, and Muffins with Mom. The events begin at 6:30 and last until 8:00 pm and you can check out books and use our resources.   On the open nights students and parents can come out and utilize the media center for research, working on an assigned project, or for reading.  Books can be checked out by parents on these nights as well.    Please come by and spend some time with your child on these nights.  We look forward to seeing you on the dates listed below.

SCHOLASTIC  BOOK FAIR :

Will be held February 5-9, 2007 and we are looking for volunteers.  If you can help, please contact panzelon@wcpss.net and we will add you to the list.

A Book Fair is a special reading event that is held in schools throughout the country where kids and families get to shop for their very own books! It's like a mini-bookstore, only much better! And every book has been hand-selected, reviewed and approved by reading specialists.

Top five reasons not to miss the Fair when it comes to your school:

  1. You can shop from hundreds of quality books in every price range, interest, and reading level.
  2. You'll find exclusive, more affordable editions of many of the most popular books sold in retail stores.
  3. You'll help your child's school earn books and funds for classrooms and libraries.
  4. You'll connect with your child's school reading and literacy initiatives.
  5. And best of all, you and your child will have fun choosing books together.

Profits from the book fair will be used to purchase new books and educational materials for all the school to use.

    BOOK CHECKOUT INFORMATION

All students may check out books.  The media center runs a flexible schedule and students can come in at any time on any day to check out books.

Children in Kindergarten may check out one book at a time with their class.  They have one week to read it and then they will need to return it to their classroom teacher for it to be returned to the library.  If their book is returned then they can check out a new book.

First graders may check out one book and second through fifth grade students may check out two books at a time.  Students will need to remember that they will not be allowed to check out any new materials if they have anything overdue.  We do not charge fines for overdue materials

All students are responsible for all materials checked out from the media center.  If books are damaged or lost during the time they have them, they will be required to pay for the damage or the replacement cost for a new book.  We don't have the means to make change, so any amount over the exact amount will be considered a donation to the library.  Your child will be unable to check out any books until the matter is resolved.

What is Accelerated Reader?  AR is a computerized reading comprehension program that Rolesville has been using as a supplemental teaching tool for approximately eleven years. Students in grades 2 through 5 use this software based program from Renaissance Learning to reinforce reading comprehension and reading skills.

How does it work?  Students select a library book or a classroom book from the titles listed on the Accelerated Reader book list.  The student then reads the book and takes a computer quiz based on questions from the book.  Quizzes may have 5 or 10 questions and are multiple choice.  When completed the student is able to see the quiz results including what questions they missed and what the correct answers should be.  The student is awarded points based on their score.  Teachers are able to access the students record to check their progress.

How do I choose a book?  Always pick a book that will be interesting to you.  Ask your friends, the teacher, parents and the media staff for suggestions of books to read.  There are fiction and non-fiction titles that are available to check out.

Can I take a quiz more than once?  Students are only allowed to take a quiz one time.  You want to read the book thoroughly and not take too long to complete it.  Take your quiz soon after reading your book so you don't forget the details.  Once you select an answer, and click "next" your answer is locked in, so be sure to read all the choices.

Where can I take an AR quiz?  AR quizzes can be taken in the classroom, in the computer lab, and in the media center.  You will need to let your teacher know that you are taking a quiz and what score you received.

How many AR quizzes can I take?  Students may take as many AR quizzes as they like, but need to keep in mind that they need to know the book well before taking the quiz.  You will want to talk with your teacher about picking appropriate books.

Where can I find a list of Accelerated Reader books?  The library has several copies of the list, classroom teachers have a copy of the list and the Wake Forest Public Library and the East Regional Library have copies of Rolesville's list as well

MEDIA MONITORS AT ROLESVILLE

Each year fifth grade students who are interested in helping out in the media center are given a job description, a permission letter to have signed by their parents and a library quiz.  Those who are chosen to be media monitors will assist the media staff with shelving books, alphabetizing books on carts, helping  younger students, and being able to make displays for the  media center.   We do not allow students to come assist if they will miss any classroom instruction.  We look forward to working with our students.
