Rolesville Elementary offers a wide range of special education classes for children three to five years of age and any child in grades K - 5. Students have to meet Wake County guidelines after screening and testing to receive services and an Individualized Educational Program must be written before placement can take place. The following is a brief description of each of these programs offered at Rolesville. Pre-Kindergarten: A full day program for children between the ages of three to five who exhibit developmental delays. Resource: Students in grades K - 5 with learning difficulties may attend this class, as a “pull out” from the regular classroom, to receive assistance in reading, written language, and math skills. Materials, assignments, and teaching strategies are varied in application as required by the individual needs of the student. Speech: Pre-kindergarten- fifth graders may receive therapy if their are significant language delays, articulation disorders, and voice and fluency problems. Educable Mentally Disabled:
This program serves up to 16 students in third through fifth grades
who have IQ scores ranging from 50-70 and deficits in Adaptive Behavior.
The students are instructed in small groups determined by ability level.
The EMD program is academics based with
focus also on daily life skills and social skills. This is a highly
structured setting designed to meet the students' individual needs. Cross-categorical K-1 (CCK-1) programs are early childhood classrooms that utilize a developmental approach. The classrooms use a combination of early childhood teaching principles with special education strategies and techniques. Children work and play in centers in both child initiated teacher directed activities. Instruction is provided based on the kindergarten curriculum and individual student needs. Individual, small group, and whole group instruction occurs each day. Although the majority of children are identified as developmentally delayed in the CCK-1 classroom, children with varying areas of eligibility may be assigned. All children are kindergarten or 1st grade age and are functioning developmentally between a 2.5 to 5.5 age ranges.
